                 WORKSHOP ON THE ASTROPHYSICS OF
                      RELATIVISTIC SOURCES

Elba Island (Italy), June 2-5, 1999

The Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (Florence) is devoting the 1999
Elba Workshop to the subjet "Astrophysics of Relativistic Sources".

In a wide variety of astrophysical circumstances, both at galactic and
extragalactic scales, relativistic flows occur which manifest themselves
in jets, superluminal motions, extremely high brightness temperatures
in the radio band, flares and gamma ray bursts, pulsar winds etc.
These flows originate in compact objects - black holes and neutron stars
in particular - and appear to be usually mediated by magnetic fields.

It is the aim of the workshop to analyse, both from a theoretical and an
observational points of view, the commonalities and differences of
these phenomena and the physical processes involved
(magnetohydrodynamics, shocks, particle acceleration, radiation
transfer....).

The Workshop will take place in the Conference Center of Marciana
Marina, Elba Island (Tuscany) between June 2 and June 5, 1999. The
slight travel inconvenience of holding the workshop on the Island will
be compensated by the beauty of the place and mitigated by the plan to
organize a bus-boat transportation from Pisa Airport to Marciana, both
on the arrival and on the departing dates. The maximum number of
participants will be limited at around 70.

For each main issue it is intended to invite one key speaker and leave
ample room for contributions which fall within the scope of the
workshop. Ample time will be reserved for formal and informal
discussions among participants.

The Scientific Organizing Committee is composed of: F. Pacini
(Arcetri), M. Salvati (Arcetri), M. Vietri (Rome), S. Wagner
(Heidelberg), L. Woltjer (Arcetri and Haute Provence).

The local organizers are: R. Bandiera, E. Masini and M. Salvati.

Those interested in taking part should send an e-mail to:
                      elba99@arcetri.astro.it

They will receive by e-mail further information about the program and
practical matters. The next circular will be mailed in late February or
early March 1999.

                 PLEASE POST IN YOUR INSTITUTE.
