International research network for computational particle physics is supported by the Core-to-Core Program

of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). This project aims to construct a research network among leading institutes in Japan, USA, UK, Germany and other countries in the field of lattice quantum field theories, through promotion of international collaboration, a chain of workshops and seminars, and researcher exchange. The infrastructure of the network is to be provided by the International Lattice Data Grid (ILDG) for sharing gluon configurations and lattice data. The project is funded by JSPS and runs for two years from April 2004 till March 2006. The hub institute in Japan is the Center for Computational Sciences, Univ. of Tsukuba,



Outline of the project

Particle physics aims to clarify the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. Large scale numerical simulations using high end supercomputers plays a key role in its theoretical study. Research in this direction is rapidly developing and forming a field which can be termed "computational particle physics."

One of the goals of this project is to build up the "International Lattice Data Grid (ILDG)," which provides an international framework for sharing the simulation data in the community of lattice field theory research. The basic idea of the ILDG was proposed in 2002. Since then, its implementation has been studied by UK, US and Japanese groups and discussed in three bi-annual workshops.

Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) at the University of Tsukuba is one of the leading institutes for the development of ILDG. CCS has also been an active research center attracting many foreign visitors, and international collaboration with foreign institutes is emerging at CCS.

Building upon ILDG as the infrastructure, the project aims to promote an international research network of computational particle physics linking core institutes in Japan, USA, Europe and other continents. At the start of the project, CCS (Japan), FNAL (USA), Univ. of Edinburgh (UK) and von Neumann Institute for Computing (Germany) are the core institutes which serve as gateways to a number of institutes in the respective countries. Over this network we wish to promote physics collaborations to attack important issues in the field of computational particle physics. Expansion of institutes and countries is anticipated in the second year of the program. An overview of the network is given below.

Project activities

International Lattice Data Grid

International Lattice Data Grid (ILDG) aims to provide an international framework for sharing the simulation data in the community of lattice field theory research. This is an international effort currently involving Japan, USA, England, and Germany. Activities are coordinated via a series of bi-annual internet workshops.



We organize a series of biannual workshops to encourage international co-operation, co-ordination and collaboration in lattice field theory through the early exchange of ideas and results. A goal is to construct an international lattice field theory network (ILFTNet) which is open to all researchers in the field. The international research network of computational particle physics linking major institues should act as a core of the ILFTNet.

  • Startup Workshop "Lattice QCD simulation via International Research Network"
        21 (Tue) - 24 (Fri) Sept. 2004 at Shuzenji, Izu, Japan
    A startup workshop of this project focusing on large scale simulation of lattice gauge theory was held in Japan in September, 2004. Status of large scale simulations at each core institute was reported, and issues with international research network were discussed.



  • 3rd ILFTNet Workshop "Towards Physics at the Physical Quark Masses"
        3 (Mon) - 6 (Thu) Oct. 2005 at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA, USA
    The 3rd workshop comprises pedagogical introductions to topics in lattice QCD by invited speakers/discussion leaders, each linked to a set of short contributed presentations of recent results and a discussion session.

International collaboration

We promote collaboration in the research of lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of strong interactions. Long-term workshops and mini-workshops will be held for intensive discussions and information excnage. Topics include "non-perturbative renormalization", "light hadron phenomenology", and "heavy quark physics."

Researcher exchange

To activate the international collaboration, junior Japanese researchers will be sent to core institutes in UK, USA and Germany. Senior researchers will also be sent as researcher exchange toward establishing longer-term collaborative relations.
